The Safe Steps project has officially started, focusing on increasing the safety of civilians in the Kharkiv region in relation to risks associated with explosive ordnance.
The project is being implemented in a mobile format: four mine risk education teams will work in communities across Kupiansk (outside the 0–20 km zone), Chuhuiv, Lozova, Kharkiv, and Bohodukhiv districts.
The teams are currently undergoing preparation. Twelve instructors are receiving specialized training, while the teams will also be equipped with standalone VR headsets to conduct sessions directly in communities.
VR headsets are an important component of the project, complementing traditional mine risk education. Using the headsets, participants will be able to take part in immersive simulations featuring realistic scenarios of potential encounters with explosive ordnance. They will learn to identify hazards and demonstrate the correct safety behavior.
This format helps participants not only gain essential knowledge but also practically develop safe decision-making skills.
The project is implemented by the Peaceful Heaven of Kharkiv Charitable Foundation in partnership with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), with financial support from the Government of Japan.
